about

Improvisations on an Elka Synthex marks the debut of Peter Van Hoesen's new Maison Attali alter ego. Throughout a 31 minute minimalist journey the Belgian musician presents a carefully balanced selection of live improvisations on the legendary Elka Synthex synthesizer.

The album was recorded at Van Hoesen's Handwerk Audio studio in one afternoon. It features live recordings of the artist manually playing the synthesizer in full experimental mode, without any effects added. A final selection was made out of nearly four hours of material. Apart from subtle loudness mastering no other mixing or mastering was applied. As a result the listener is provided with an unfiltered sonic image showing Van Hoesen's interpretation of the Elka's unique character. Growling resonances, unusual pitch movements, squelchy oscillator modulations and hissing potentiometers are all part of the improvisational journey.

The Elka Synthex is a polyphonic 8-voice analog polyphonic synthesizer designed by Mario Maggi and manufactured by Italian music instrument manufacturer Elka from 1983 to 1985. It is not entirely clear how many units were produced. Estimates range from 1000 to 1850 units. Today it is regarded as a true classic, standing alongside instruments such as the Roland Jupiter 8 and the Oberheim Matrix 12. Its unique architecture invites real-time performance. With 30 knobs, 6 sliders and 80 switches the Synthex is a true live machine. Its sound is wide, complex and rich in texture. It can sound smooth as well as downright aggressive.

Recording path: Elka Synthex serial #1207 into Pro Tools via a Tegeler Audio VTC compressor, APB Dynasonics mixing desk and Lynx Studio Technology Aurora 16 interface.
